Best Duck Hunting Waders – How to Stay Warm and Dry on Your Next Big Hunt

For the amount of physical abuse that duck hunters take while out hunting it could be considered an extreme sport. Mud, wind, water and cold are usually experienced in spades on most occasions. Because of these extreme weather conditions it is important to keep yourself warm and comfortable. The most important piece of clothing when trying to stay comfortable and warm is a good pair of quality duck waders so why not get the best duck hunting waders you can?

Do I Need Chest Waders or Hip Waders?

First of all, if you will be hunting in all seasons I highly recommend that you purchase one of each. When I am hunting in cold weather or deeper water then I would definitely wear my chest waders to keep me warm and dry. If it is warm, and sunny or I’m going to be hunting around shallow streams or creeks, then I would use my hip waders.

If I were to purchase just one pair of duck hunting waders I would choose a pair of chest waders. With a chest wader you can always drop the shoulder straps and tie them around your waist when the weather is too warm.

LaCrosse Swamp Tuff Pro Realtree Waders – #1 Recommendation

LaCrosse chest wadersIf you want the best of the best in waterfowl waders look no further than the LaCrosse Swamp Tuff Pro waders. These waders have outstanding waterproof protection and chaffing-proof material that you can wear all day without any wear and tear on your skin. This can be very important if you have a long way to walk in wet terrain. They were also the winner of Field & Stream’s Best of the Best Award.

The Armor Weld liquid rubber protective coating is the best protection for duck hunting. It also has double stitched seams for extra durability. The fleece lining adds an extra layer of comfort and a warm barrier to the elements. The fit on these is much more comfortable for longer hunting trips. They are warm and have a built-in abrasion-resistant weave that is much easier on your skin and clothing than other waders.

The 1,000 grams of Thinsulate Ultra Insulation and heavyweight 5mm fleece-lined neoprene will keep you warm on the coldest days.

I had the chance to try these out on a hunting trip to Canada and I can say that I am truly impressed with the LaCrosse Swamp chest waders. It was a cold weekend, but I never felt the elements. I also able to get in and out of my layout blind with these than my other set of waders.

Yes these waders are more expensive than some other choices, but they really are worth it.

Frogg Toggs Neoprene Boot Foot Wader – #2 Recommendation

Frogg Togg Neoprene wadersThese Frogg Toggs Neoprene waders have a 3.5mm layer of neoprene with a hi-back design. They come with an extra thick knee pad that are really handy when in rough or bumpy terrain.

The fit is outstanding and are very warm even in cold, wet weather. I really like the feel of these waders and were one of the more comfortable pairs that I tried on.

The only downside to these waders is that they are not camouflage. In every other way they are a superior wader that you will be very happy with. If camouflage isn’t a concern then these would be an excellent choice. If I didn’t already own the Allen waders below I would choose these in a heartbeat.

The thing I love the most about these is how comfortable they are. They feel more like a wet suit you would wear surfing, so they are much more comfortable and easy to move around in than the rest of the waders in this list.

Allen Company Camouflage Bootfoot Chest Wader

These 3.5mm neoprene waders made by Allen Company are my personal favorite pair of high quality waders. The high back design with knee pads and hand warmer pockets make this an excellent addition to any hunters gear.

The camouflage is very effective in keeping you hidden to your prey and the semi-hard toe cap, 1000 gram Thinsulate insulation boot is guaranteed to keep your feet warm and dry when out in the cold for hours.

The outside is a 3.5 mil neoprene with a nylon layer closest to your skin. They are comfortable, durable and best of all, keep out all of the elements without reducing your mobility.

The knee pads are extra thick and reinforced to help protect them when working in rough and uneven conditions. These neoprene waders are well constructed and will last you for many hunting seasons. I’ve used these waders on numerous hunting trips and wouldn’t dream of leaving home without them.

Duck Commander Breathable Deluxe Chest Wader

Breathable Duck Commander chest wadersThis is another excellent pair of chest waders made by Duck Commander. The Breathable Deluxe waders are available in many sizes from 8 to 14. The Realtree Max-4 camouflage is expertly done and the breathable material is nice for early season duck hunting.

The insulated boots will keep your feet dry and warm even in the coldest conditions.  There is very little not to like about these outstanding breathable waders.

One thing to note is the boots tend to fit a bit smaller so I recommend getting the next size up to make sure they fit. I’m a size 11, but had to go with a size 12 to get the right width for my feet.
